Why There’s Water in Your Brine Tank

On a standard system, that refilled water sits in the tank between cycles, sometimes for a week or more depending on your household’s water usage and how the system is programmed. That’s expected behavior, not a malfunction.
Standard Softeners vs. High-Efficiency Softeners in Southeastern PA Homes
Not every water softener handles the refill step the same way. Standard, timer-based softeners are built to hold that refilled water until the next scheduled regeneration, regardless of whether your household actually used enough water to justify it. Higher efficiency systems take a more measured approach.
Standard, Timer-Based Softeners
Regenerate on a fixed schedule whether the resin needs it or not, and hold refilled brine water in the tank between cycles. This is common in a lot of the older, builder-grade systems we still see in homes throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties.
High-Efficiency, Metered Softeners
Track actual water usage and regenerate only when the resin is close to exhausted, using proportional amounts of salt and water. Less frequent regeneration means less standing water sitting in the tank overall.
